Description

I recently procured a UV-5RM with GPS, which does not appear to work with CHIRP.

Printed on device:

Model: UV-5RM PRO
FCC IC: 2AJGM-5RHPRO

Purchase Link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0DL31C77L/
Closest Listing on MFGR Website: https://www.baofengradio.com/products/uv-5rm-plus-gps
Software from MFGR website: https://baofeng.s3.amazonaws.com/Baofeng_UV-5RM_Plus_GPS_CPS_V1.0.zip

Setup1
-Windows11
-USB-SERIAL CH340(COM8) -- Windows built-in drivers.
-CHIRP chirp-next-20250214-win64 (standalone)

Setup2
-Windows10_VM
-Driver from CH341SER.EXE, sourced from https://cdn.sparkfun.com/assets/learn_tutorials/8/4/4/CH341SER.EXE
-CHIRP chirp-next-20250214-win64 (standalone)
-Baofeng_UV-5RM_Plus_GPS_CPS_V1.0 (Installed)

Procedure:

Setup1
Attempted running CHIRP from extracted zip.
Chose corresponding COM port for serial adapter.
Attempted connection profile for '5RM'
On read, responded "Radio did not respond as expected (A)" <-- debug log attached
Attempted profiles for 5RH and uv17Pro. No success.

Setup2
Attempted running CHIRP from extracted zip.
Chose corresponding COM port for serial adapter.
Attempted connection profile for '5RM'
On read, responded "Radio did not respond as expected (A)"
Closed CHIRP.

Installed Baofeng_UV-5RM_Plus_GPS_CPS_V1.0 <-- ProcMon install logs available.
Installed Serial driver via CH341SER.EXE to resolve driver issues in Device Manager
Ran the installed '5RH Pro' application.
Read radio settings. Success.

Model Name: [blank]
Software Version: v1_0_94
Hardware Version: v1_0_0
Last Programmed Date: 2024.10.24 10:49
Closed out 5RH application.

Rerun CHIRP.
Attempted connection profile for '5RM'.
On read, still responded "Radio did not respond as expected (A)" <-- debug log attached

Note: At no point during the procedures was the serial cable attached to the Baofeng end touched throughout the attempts to eliminate possibility of issues being pointed to bad connection. The USB end was disconnected twice while initially determining correct driver to install on the Win10 VM.

Having the same issue with the same exact radio. I bought two and have tried both supplied USB cables (info below):

1a86 QinHeng Electronics
5512 CH341 in EPP/MEM/I2C mode, EPP/I2C adapter
5523 CH341 in serial mode, usb to serial port converter
5584 CH341 in parallel mode, usb to printer port converter
7523 HL-340 USB-Serial adapter
752d CH345 MIDI adapter
7584 CH340S
e008 HID-based serial adapter

I've tried using the latest CHIRP (3/1) on Windows 11 and Linux Mint 19 (Ubuntu 18.04 LTS), with the same results as Jim K.

Thanks

3/11/25 - Update: I bought a Radioddity PC001 FTDI USB Programming Cable in case the vendor-supplied cables were the culprit, but no joy.

I'm also having this same problem. Have tried multiple cables and multiple firmwares with 2 of these radios, but always get the "Radio did not respond as expected (A)" error on read.
Model as sold on Amazon: AR-5RH Pro

Looks like it's related to #11669
