I just realized. my Kenwood th-f6a HT is probably 9600 baud max. not sure how chirp limits the speed of the usb line on the new apple M1 silicon. But chirp works just fine on my radioddity baofeng uv-5r3 and yaesu ft8900.
but different bud rate would explain the memory errors.

No, this has nothing to do with baud rate, nor your Apple M1. There is, however, garbage coming from your radio. Either the radio is defective, your cable is very noisy, or something else is going on. Regardless, the problem your debug log shows (very clearly) is not something chirp can fix. If you look in your debug log, you'll see lines like this:
[2023-06-12 21:48:39,239] chirp.drivers.kenwood_live - ERROR: Not sure what to do with this: `S*‚b‚‚‚b‚‚Š¢²²Â‚‚‚‚b‚b’b‚bŠb‚b‚bš’b‚Âb‚‚‚b‚‚‚²‚‚‚‚‚b‚b‚j'
Those abnormal characters and symbols should not be there...

Hmm cable. I can see that. I just got it back from the Kenwood repair shop. So it just passed official diagnostic
I will try lowering the volume and moving the radio farther from the pc
I have noticed the HT picking up laptop Wi-Fi/Bluetooth noise on 2m.

ok. due to modernization. I started with an upgraded cable USB for the th-f6. that proved to be a problem.
I went back to the old serial cable and got a usb->D9 serial -> original programming cable.
I am now able to successfully download the memories in the radio.
I can't seem to get the upload menu to enable. how do I tell chirp to upload?

Upload is greyed out on live radios because changes you make go straight to the radio in real-time. So there's nothing to upload.
