Bug #11815
closedMuted speaker & channel zero
0%
Description
I believe I have discovered an issue with programming Baofeng UV-6 handhelds. I have six UV-6 radios used with the Air Cadet organisation. Reprogramming them has shown the issue. I do not know what software or programming leads have been used with these radios before now.
I have used the latest Chirp download and consulted the documentation on the Chirp website but, can find no solution.
I have used 2 different USB programming leads, one with CH340 chip and the other with FTDI. The results are the same with both leads.
Using Chirp, I have read from a UV-6 that has not been reprogrammed and it does not show the symptoms. Programming another UV-6 with this image now makes the reprogrammed UV-6 show the symptoms.
Reprogramming causes these two symptoms:
1). When the radio is operated, both simplex and split frequency operation works as normal but when reprogramming with a transmission CTCSS tone (for repeater access), this results in the receiver audio being muted, but the green ‘signal received’ LED lights as normal. Pressing the MONI button during receive removes the mute and allows audio from the speaker.
2). The radio reports by spoken English the channel number. This is normally 1 to 128. After reprogramming, the lowest channel number is now zero. There is no channel zero on the Chirp screen.

Is the attached image the clean one (i.e. a direct copy of the radio without any problems) or a post-modification broken one?
It would be very unusual to see downloading an image from a working radio and immediately uploading it to another radio causing a problem that CHIRP is introducing. The problem(s) would come when you make a change with chirp and then upload it. Have you tried the former?
Also, have you tried re-programming with the OEM software? I see in #9485 that this radio seems to have some firmware bugs that are tickled even by the manufacturer's software, but knowing would be interesting.

Hi Dan,
thank you for a swift response.
The image attached to the initial report is from the re-programmed UV-6 that exhibits the symptoms.
Attached to this email is the image taken from the one UV-6 that has not been reprogrammed and that operates as expected.
I have tried to program a UV-6 with the symptoms using another programming software: UV67_U_V_UV_CPS.CAB (attached) but this did not correct the issue.
#9485 does describe the issue.
Best regards

Those two images are identical, so not particularly helpful. I also would like an answer/confirmation to my question about downloading from a good radio and uploading into a bad one without any other changes. That should work, but if it doesn't, then it will lead us in another direction.
Also, the system refused your .cab attachment, but please keep in mind the IssueInstructions you indicated you read, about not attaching other OEM's software to these tickets.

Hi Dan,
apologies for delay... been away for a couple of days.
Downloading from my one good UV-6 was immediately followed by uploading into another UV-6 with no changes. The .img file was only saved to hard-disk after the download-upload.
If no solution is found, then these UV-6s are still useful to the Air Cadets because our repeater is on non-Amateur frequencies and does not need a CTCSS access tone. We will just accept that they are unsuitable for Amateur Radio repeaters.
