Bug #11606
closedBaofeng BF-F8HP-PRO missing Mid power level option
100%
Description
I was copying and pasting frequencies from one of my other Baofengs to this new BF-F8HP-PRO, which worked. I then went to set the power levels to Mid on each HAM frequency, because I don't want to transmit at 11W regularly.
I expected to be able to click the dropdown menu in power and select Mid.
When I clicked the dropdown for power, only Low and High were available options.
This is a new radio that was relelased by BTECH on October 1.

Can you try the attached module with LoadingTestModules? Based on other radios that use this driver, I think this should be correct.
Also, I'm not sure what the actual power levels in the radio are. Looks like 8W is high, but do you know what it's supposed to be for mid and low?

So I loaded the module per your request, and downloaded the data from the radio, after having set power levels correctly in the manufacturer supplied CPS. The Mid option is now there, but everything already set to Mid is being read as Low, along with everything else that was actually set to Low.
For power output what I see is 8W, 3W, and 1W (based on the product page https://baofengtech.com/product/bf-f8hp-pro/). However, when I tested mine it was 11W, 5.5W, 3W on 2M, 9W, 5W, 3W on 70cm. I didn’t test output on the 1.25 meter band, but I think from what I’m reading that’s supposed to be 5W, 3W, 1W.

Okay, CHIRP will encode what the manufacturer claims, regardless of actual performance :D
Can you tell me in your sample image you originally attached some channels that are high, med, and low? Or if none of them are set, can you attach a new image (with at least one at each level, identified) so I can look?
Thanks!

The sample image was factory stock other than station ID. I could get you the one I’m using now with adjusted power levels. What would be the best way to send that?

If you could attach it to the issue here that would be best (some email clients will block .img files)

Thanks!

Here you go. Low, Mid, High in that order.

Okay... those all look right. Did you just create that image in chirp? If so, what I need is for you to do it with the radio itself (or the OEM software) but download it with chirp so I can see what chirp is doing wrong.

Ok I’ll make one on the radio, then move it to Chirp.

This one was made in factory CPS with low, mid, high in the 1,2,3 positions respectively. Applied to radio. Opened Chirp, downloaded from radio, and these are the results.

Okay, perfect thanks. Can you use this updated module to make sure that CHIRP reads existing memories properly and that when chirp sets each of the levels, the radio agrees?
Updated by Matt Thompson about 1 month ago
That all checks out, both ways. Now the only thing I’m not seeing is where to add a channel to a “bank” or what the radio calls zones. I don’t know if that’s supported in CHIRP.

Yep, banks are not implemented in the driver (yet).
Okay, thanks for the power level confirmation, I'll get that pushed for tomorrow.

Here are how the banks work in these radios...
CHIRP rows 1- 100 = bank 1 channels 1-100
CHIRP rows 101- 200 = bank 2 channels 1-100
CHIRP rows 201- 300 = bank 3 channels 1-100
CHIRP rows 301- 400 = bank 4 channels 1-100
...
CHIRP rows 901-1000 = bank 10 channels 1-100
