Is the USB/serial chip in the cable detected by the operating system? If no, you're using a bad cable.
Please see if the cable is pressed all the way into the socket. This is a very common problem.
If that doesn't work, change to a different programming cable. I've had reports of cables with Prolific PL210x chips not working, while other cables (probably with CH34x chips) do work.

<Is the USB/serial chip in the cable detected by the operating system? If no, you're using a bad cable.<
Yes the pc (win 10) does detect the cable
<I've had reports of cables with Prolific PL210x chips not working, while other cables (probably with CH34x chips) do work.<
as you can see from the enclosed screenshot it is using the CH340 chip.
still not working

is the radio turned on or off when You connect it to the computer?
in case of the radio turned off, does the blue diode light on when You connect the radio to the computer?
does the blue diode go out when You turn the radio on?
in case of the blue diode not going out, does a "plug" icon appear at the upper right corner of the LCD?

When the radio is off, I connect it to the PC, and it recognizes the com port. What Blue diode light? I have the k5(8) it's the newer model. The white flash light on the top does turn on when I hold the ppt button while turning it on. But nothing is seen on the screen. The comport is at 9600 bps

not the flashlight, but the rx / th diode
the rx / tx diode should turn on with blue color when the radio (switched off) is connected to PC
but the diode should go out when the radio is then switched on
you turn the radio on, the blue diode goes out, and you can program the radio

THANKS that worked
- when connecting to PC by the cable, the radio should be switched off, blue diode lights on
- do not hold the PPT when You want to program the radio, switch the radio on, blue diode goes out, the radio boots
- hold PTT only when You want to do a firmware upgrade, switch the radio on, blue diode goes out, the radio does not boot, the flashlight lights on instead 2a. during programming the radio itself does not signal anything visually, just reboots after settings/channels upload 3a. during firmware upgrade upload the flashlight flashes, and the radio reboots when finished
