Description

Hi. New to the community. I was successful in downloading the CHIRP software and installed the drivers for the MAXTON DATA cable Model:RPC:K1-U. Once the drivers were installed, I could chose a COM3 as the single option when working with the "Download from Radio" menu option.

I connect the cable to the radio, turn it on. At this point I notice the radio has a flashing "PF3". I then press "OK". Nothing happens with CHIRP at this point. The only think I do notice is that the flashing "PF3" on my radio now no longer exists and I just have a normal frequency showing. If I run through the cycle again, I get an error message stating "could not open port COM3: [Error 5] Access is denied". I can restart CHIRP and run through the cycle again and the process repeats.

I'd appreciate any advice.
Thanks,
Lee

Hi Lee,

I have a Kenwood TH-F6A. I've programmed it without issues using CHIRP running under Windows, Linux and macOS.

My recommendation would be for you to check the following...

  • double check Device Manager to make sure that COM3 is the actual port that has been assigned to your programming cable
  • while in Device Manager check the Driver tab of the assigned port to see if the USB-to-TTL chip is from the FTDI or Prolific chip vendor. If it is a Prolific chip, you will most likely have to download, install and select the older Prolific v3.2.0.0 driver ("check here for details":http://www.miklor.com/COM/UV_Drivers.php).
  • make sure that Menu No. 9 of the radio has been set to "PC" as shown in CHAPTER 14: INTERFACING TO PERIPHERALS (page 46 of the "Kenwood TH-F6A/TH-F7E INSTRUCTION MANUAL":https://manual.kenwood.com/files/TH-F6_F7-English.pdf).
