Bug #7641
closedUV-82C "An Error has Occurred Radio did not respond"
0%
Description
Hello Chirp folks, I an IT support agent working with a customer trying to clone and apply said image to about a dozen new Baofeng UV-82c devices.
Right now we running the 20200211 version of the Chirp software.
We are using a FTDI driver version 2.12.28.0 for the USB Serial port (ComX) adapter.
We have tested from multiple Windows 10 computers, 64-bit, 1903 and 1909.
Whenever we attempt to "Download from Radio" we select the appropriate com port, in this case, the adapter we are using is com4, the company Baofeng, and since UV-82C is not listed, we treid just the UV-82.
"An Error has Occurred
Radio did not respond"
We tested UV-82HP, UV-82iii, UV-82WP, same message each time.
We have an un-programmed UV-82HP and we were successful in doing the "Download from Radio" procedure and reading data from the device, which leads me to believe that the USB Adapter, as well as the USB/COM driver is functional.
I am suspecting that since the UV-82C is not listed in this menu within the CHIRP application, that we need to use a specific driver that isn't obvious, or else perhaps the UV-82C is infact no longer supported?
I did peruse the issues list and seen some folks notating the UV-82C is weird to plug in, and we have ensured the cable is seated.
This is not something I personally have much experience in, any suggestions would be great.
Thanks!

Hello agian, is there anything else specific that you need from me? I read through the "how to" and from my perspective it appears i have provided the pertinent info.
I guess for the short term, can you confirm which device we should be selecting from the dropdown in Chirp to interface the UV-82C?

I'm not an expert on Chinese radios; but from the log it appears that there's nothing coming back from the radios. Either the plug is still not fully seated (that appears to be a big problem with these radios), or the cable has an issue (RX not connected, or defective / fake chip).
Since that same cable (?) works on one UV-82HP, that could be ruled out. However, you're listing several radios which you tried unsuccessfully, but which are known to (mostly) work, including the 82C. So, I would still suspect that the connector to the radio doesn't fit properly, or that the cable has a problem. You may want to open the USB case, we know of cases where one of the leads was missing.

Bernhard, thanks for your update.
I think we are on the same page, however just in case I will clarify further:
we only posses two models of these Beofang radios.
UV-82c
UV-82HP
We are able to read the UV-82HP no problem, no issue there.
The UV-82C is the one that isn't working (muliple UV-82C radios tested).
From Chirp, when we attempt to read the radio, when we select the brand/model from the dropdown UV-82C isn't an option, we have essentially tested every uv-82(x) variant with the same results.
I am remote, and not physically in front of these radios or the cable, I feel like I have exhausted having my onsite contact in trying to seat the cable correctly. Opening up the USB cable is probably not gonna something we look into.
Is there a cable config you would recommend for this purpose that we could try? Unsure if you offer these cables or if you could share something such as an amazon link so we can purchase it? To add to this, we only have one USB cable to play with. It is something definitely worth ruling out. I also understand that you do not warranty or explicitly support or will be on the hook for this cable recommendation if it doesn't work or things go awry.
Thank you in advance.

Just one additional advice: don't go cheap on these cables. Good genuine USB to Serial converter chips and good quality connectors are a must.

Bernhard, I think we can consider this issue closed.
The customer decided to replace all the UV-82C with another known working model.
That is one way to deal with this =)

Sorry to hear that there wasn't any easier solution here.
