Bug #717
closedYaesu FT-897D communication never starts
0%
Description
Radio connected via Prolific USB-serial interface + official CT-62 CAT cable. Port shows up as COM4.
Interface works perfect with Ham Radio Deluxe in both directions.
However CHIRP fails to read the memory from the radio. Below the important lines of debug.log.
CHIRP daily-20130315 on WinXP (Python 2.7.2) [...snip...] User selected Yaesu FT-857/897 (US) on port COM4 Clone thread started -- Exception: -- Traceback (most recent call last): File "chirpui\clone.pyo", line 225, in run File "chirp\ft817.pyo", line 376, in sync_in RadioError: Failed to communicate with radio: Attempting to use a port that is not open ------ Clone failed: Failed to communicate with radio: Attempting to use a port that is not open Clone thread ended
I have tried to change the Prolific driver to different version, no change.
If I unplug the USB-serial cable, I instead get a dedicated error message that the port is not found. And as mentioned, HRD works fine with the same setup.
CHIRP on the same PC works fine for programming a Baofeng UV-5R using the special Baofeng cable (also a Prolific driver).
This is being run on a Windows XP SP3.

I forgot to mention that when I try to read the memory from the radio, the interface just hangs infinitely in the Cloning dialog popup. It is responsive to being Canceled.
If I turn off the radio with the cloning dialog open I get an error that CHIRP failed to read block 0, so CHIRP is seeing the interface allright it seems.

- Platform changed from Windows to All
Did you put radio in clone?
The correct operation sequence to download from ft897 is:
- switch on the radio while pressing both <- -> buttons to push it to clone mode
- prepare chirp for download selecting menu Radio - download from radio and setting the com port and radio type then press OK
- start send on the radio pressing C button download (should) then start immediately and both radio and chirp show the operation via a progress bar.
For upload the sequence is:
- switch on the radio while pressing both <- -> buttons to push it to clone mode
- prepare chirp for upload selecting menu Radio - Upload to radio and setting the com port (do not press Ok yet)
- start receive on the radio pressing A button
- press Ok in chirp dialog to start upload

My sincere apologies!
I have completely missed the point of having to place the radio in clone mode.
I guess when using the UV-5R everything happened automatically, I just assumed it would be the same with the FT-897.
I have followed your instructions, and everything indeed works perfectly.
However, I have to ask, for future reference, where is this detailed out in your documentation? I can't seem to find it in the product itself, nor on the Web site here.
Thanks - Henrik

Indeed, it is very frustrating that Yaesu does not include a computer-initiated programming mode in their radios. Yaesu is the only manufacturer that lacks this feature.
There is a section of your Yaesu manual that details the procedure for cloning. This is the procedure Chirp relies on to send data to and from the radio.
