CHIRP

I have to bump with a "me too," the error I get when downloading the UV-5RX3 was "received more data than expected" or something. This is my first time using either Chirp or a Baofeng/BTech radio.

I have not received my BF-3R yet. I think it's on a slow boat from China...very slow boat.

I did purchase a UV-5X3 a few days back from BTECH and received it last night. I was able to program it manually with some difficulty (I mean, after all, who reads the manual?) and programmed some frequencies with no problems at all using Chirp.

Is the UV-5X3 the same as the UV-5RX3?

Dave, in my last post I meant to say that I didn't have any issues such as "received more data than expected" when I uploaded the first .img file from the radio.

OK, I just answered my own question about the difference between the 5RX3 and the 5X3...it appears the 5RX3 is the RadioOddity version of the BTECH 5X3

I just received the radio yesterday and after several false starts, I was able to deduce that this radio is programmable using what you suggested. I tried several models before landing on the Radioddity UV-5RX3. I still received a couple of "are you sure?" messages. Clicking through them got me what I was looking for.

The programming cable I have is from BTECH which incorporates a bonafide FTDI chip. That worked perfectly.

FWIW, I was able to download a short "program" from a BF F8HP into the BF-R3... lucky I guess.

That is what someone else on the [chirp_users] mailing list reported. Does the radio have 3 power level settings as well as 3 bands?

When I tried to access the URL shown above via Chrome, Google intervened with a RED BOX warning that the website is dangerous so I closed the window and found CHIRP.

I got the same red screen. I opted not to take any chances. I used the Chirp app made for the Radioddity UV-5RX3r on my BF-R3 and it worked fine. As I remember, there were a couple of caution screens but I just went through those with no issues.

Does the BF-R3 also have 3 power levels (TXP=HIGH/MID/LOW) or just 2 (TXP=HIGH/LOW)? On a radio with 3 power levels you will see an H, M or L in the upper status display. On a radio will 2 power levels you will see an H in the upper status display when HIGH is selected and nothing when LOW is selected.

It only has two power levels. Low (1watt)and High (4.5-5watts, depending on band).

I recently bought what may be a more recent BF-R3, and it behaves differently than described here. Holding down "6" during power-on displays "190831M" although CHIRP shows the expected message as "151123H".

Trying to read as a BTECH UV-5X3 never works.

I can read and program memories as a Baofeng BF-F8HP, but the settings tab is blank.

I can read and program both memories and settings as a Radioddity UV-5R EX, but the settings show only VHF/UHF without 220.

After reading as a Radioddity UV-5R EX, but not before, I can read and program as a Radioddity UV-5RX3, but the settings show only VHF/UHF without 220.

When I say that settings do not show 220, I can set the VHF range to 134-225; the radio does work on 220 regardless of what this setting is. (Does this affect the radio or is it just an internal check for CHIRP?) Is simply widening the VHF range the correct approach? If so, then CHIRP seems to be fully working.

It won't. Only a genuine BTECH UV-5X3 from Baofeng Tech (the radio dealer in the USA) will work with those Vendor/Model selections.

The UV-5R EX is only a dual band model and choosing it will only provide support for 2 bands (VHF 136-174 and UHF 400-520). Unless you've made the mistake of uploading a "foreign" image from another radio, downloading using the Radioddity UV-5RX3 Vendor/Model selections (the correct selections for the BF-R3), the VHF band limits should be should be 136 and 260 for the VHF Lower Limit and VHF Upper Limit respectively in order to cover both VHF bands.

As mentioned above, your radio should have come from the factory with the VHF band limits set to 136-260. The Baofeng UV-5R like tri-band models stretch out the VHF band limits to cover both the 136-174 MHz and 200-260 MHz VHF bands. The in between frequencies (174-200) are locked out by the firmware.
