Description

Observed with both 0.4.0 and daily 2014-06-01. Mac OS 10.9.3, KK7DS Python runtime R10.

I'm using a Valley Enterprises FTDI cable with a genuine OPC-478. I can upload using this same FTDI cable and other adapters to a Wouxun KG-UV6X and a Kenwood TM-D700A without any issues.

I can download from this Icom just fine, but uploads always fail. The upload begins, the radio display says "CL IN", and the signal meter, which seems to be used as a progress meter while uploading, moves across until it's even with the right edge of the "CL IN". CHIRP reports "An error has occurred. Failed to communicate with the radio: Did not get clone result from radio"

At this point I have to power cycle the radio, and my radio is blanked. I downloaded this blank image, and it won't upload either, failing in the same way, so it does not appear to be anything specific to the frequency data I was originally trying to upload.

I got a chance to try it under VMware with Windows XP, and it works. Same Mac, same FTDI adapter, same radio interface cable, same radio -- only difference was windows. Looks like a mac-specific bug.

Did you install any ftdi drivers?

Please provide the output from the following command in Terminal (Applications, Utilities):
@
kextstat | grep -i ftdi

No, I'm using the stock OS-provided driver, which appears in kextstat as:

235 0 0xffffff7f828a0000 0x7000 0x7000 com.apple.driver.AppleUSBFTDI (1.0.1b3) <120 34 5 4 3>

I can confirm the same behavior here. I have a FTDI cable from RTSystems. It works to program IC-T70A correctly using Windows 7. I then use the Mac with RTSystems driver, the COM port is detected correctly, the "download" function works, however the "upload" function results in Mac OS X 10.10.3 hanging. I then removed the RTSystems driver from the system, modified Info.plist for the Apple Included driver, disabled the driver signature checking on the Mac and tried again using the Apple FTDI driver. Download works correctly, however upload begins and the radio displays CL on the screen however the upload fails. Chirp debug log indicates that a response was not received back from the radio for entering clone mode. I then use the same setup inside Virtual Box with Windows XP and everything works correctly.

I agree that there is a Mac issue here. Perhaps with the driver. It would be interesting to add a few millisecond sleeps between byte stream inside Chirp. Maybe there is an issue with too many bytes being received at once.

Have you been able to resolve this on your own since you submitted this?

The IC-T70 is known as one of the few radios which don't cooperate with FTDI cables - they want a (genuine) Prolific.
I know that Prolific cables might not work well with Macs, but try to get a genuine one (expensive!) and try that out. The cheap fake cables will definitely fail!
