Bug #11616
openRetevis RT95

Description
I just installed a Retevis RT95 in my vehicle.
The only listing I see in the list is for Retevis RT95 + VOX.
I tried that one and when I downloaded from radio with the Retevis programming cable I got a blank list.

Hello Dan,I read the experimental warning and I thought I clicked yes. The transceiver display appeared to be connected and downloading to the software but no frequencies appeared in the list.I don't think it would be a good idea to try and upload my frequency list. Do you?
Thank you.

Rick, your debug log shows no downloads, just refusal to accept the warning. So maybe you tried in a previous session and the debug log got reset in between. Please do this:
- Start chirp fresh
- Radio->Download
- Choose the "RT95 (+ VOX)" (this handles the regular RT95 and RT95-VOX)
- Accept the warning
- Click okay to start the download
- Help->Report or update a bug, choose existing, and this number
That will upload the full debug log and the image that gets captured so I can see what you see

OK, thank you Dan. It might be a few days before I can get back to this. Going out of town for a hunting trip.

Hello Dan,Yes, I haven't set any channels into it yet. Is the blank list what I should be getting for no channels set?I have a channel list saved that I want to use CHIRP to upload into the RT95. I want to make sure that the RT95 is communicating correctly with the CHIRP software before I upload to the radio.I'm unsure if is the VOX or non-VOX variant. The label on the radio says RT95.I appreciate the assistance.

The radio identifies as a VOX model, so I imagine that's what you have. @Jim Unroe may be able to offer more details on how to tell the difference.
If you have no channels stored in the radio, then the blank list is what you should expect, yes :)
I would try programming one in and upload it to the radio to make sure it shows up properly. Assuming so, proceed with the rest.

Unfortunately Retevis chose not to indicate on the box or in the model name that any features were added, updated or removed. The only way you can tell is by looking at the physical radio's menus. The model with VOX will have VOX menus, the older non-VOX model won't.
My non-VOX version shipped with no channels programmed. My VOX version came with 146.520 programmed into channel 1. After CHIRP downloads from a radio, it will only show what the radio currently has programmed in it (which is exactly what it is supposed to show). ;-)

Hello Jim,So you think I might have the non-VOX radio since I am getting a blank list when downloading from the radio?I'll have to check and see if any channels are programmed later since the vehicle isn't available now.

No. Absolutely not. In Note #3
you made it sound like you thought that because CHIRP listed no channels there was a problem. I was just pointing out that it was common for these radios to have little or no programmed channels in them from the factory.
[2024-10-15 12:31:57,442] chirp.drivers.anytone778uv - DEBUG: radio model: 'RT95-P' version: 'V100'
CHIRP should detect if the radio is the newer V2 model with VOX or the older V1 model without VOX. CHIRP detected the "-P" in the radio's version which indicates to CHIRP that your radio is model with the VOX feature.
But it is not out of the realm of possibility that Retevis could update the firmware in a way could break CHIRP's detection. The only way to know absolutely sure would be for you to review the radio's menu system. If it has menu entries for controlling the VOX feature, then your radio is the VOX model and CHIRP has detected it as intended.

How do I get into channel mode? The manual I received is useless describing how to get there. The steps they say don't work.

Just like it says in the manual. Tap the [FUNC] key then tap the key that is programmed to toggle the V/M function ('P2' in your radio according to the image that you uploaded).

None of this is a CHIRP issue. If you want to continue this discussion, you can contact me elsewhere (the CHIRP users mailing list and/or my email address: jru.rt95@kc9hi.net). I can see if I can find my RT95 with VOX among my hundreds of radios, hook it up to power and see if I can help you figure it out. But I would expect that the problem is that you still don't have any programmed channels. The radio is complaining about switching to MR mode because there is nothing in that mode to access.
