Bug #11578
closedMacOS Chirp does not recognize USB-C Radio
0%
Description
I am trying to connect my TIDRadio TD-H3 Radio to Chirp
I would expect that the H3 Radio would show in the Port drop down.
USB-C port connected to TIDRadio Ham (both locked or unlocked) does not display in the drop down. The Help with port functionality does not identify the radio. I am using a USB Data Cable and not just a charging cable.
(Has this ever worked before? New radio? Does it work with OEM software?) Not with Chirp on the Mac. TIDRadio does not make a version of their OEM software for Mac.

Yep, this would be a driver problem, nothing to do with CHIRP at all. You'll need to determine which USB-to-serial chip is in the radio and make sure you have drivers for that device. CHIRP can't talk to a radio unless the operating system has drivers loaded for it.
My TDH3 does not actually communicate with the radio over USB-C, it only charges that way. Communication with the computer requires a separate programming cable. If yours is the same you might be expecting to be able to directly connect it, but that's not how it works.

Dan,
The USB-C on the battery is indeed only for charging. The USB-C on the radio just below the “K” connector IS used for data transfer to program the radio. There are many many videos showing this functionality. This is one of the reason’s I bought the H3 is because it didn’t need a special USB to Serial cable. I’ll include a YouTube video that you can look at to validate my statement.

You can program the radio with the either the USB-C OR the Kenwood connector via a CH340 cable.
Please change the status back to NEW from “Not a bug”.

Unless connecting it results in a new UNIX device in /dev/
that CHIRP does not offer you in the download box, then it's not a CHIRP bug. CHIRP does not speak to USB devices directly under any circumstance. It must be exposed by the operating system as a device node (and be returned in the list-serial-ports) action.
If that is somehow happening, please select "custom" in the port box, do a successful download from the radio, and upload the debug log to this bug (using help->report or update a bug) and I'll have a look.

Dan,
Please disregard my e-mail. I found that I have a broken lead in my data cable. I found another USB-C to USB-A cable and added a USB-A female to USB-C Male adaptor and Chirp now recognizes the radio as expected. Thanks for your help.
