The Aux Memory area of your radio is almost totally blank. Please attach the following backup image (and any older backup image) the folder that CHIRP automatically makes.

C:\Users\gwbry\AppData\Roaming\CHIRP\backups\Baofeng_UV-5R_20231121T004445.img

I did not have an attachment .img file in the email response. When CHIRP installed it did NOT create a folder like you advised? All my .img files are in my Documents folder. I don't understand exactly what you are advising me to do in order for me to be able to change the opening screen.

Please advise.

Upgrade to next 11/29/23 and it should fix your issue

I installed 11/29/23 but it didn't repair the issue. When click on Settings tab the same error comes up an error has occurred." 'NoneType' object is not iterable.

So I cannot change the power on message even when I open up the browser. The slot is locked where the message was originally entered.

Any suggestions please? As I said previously on the response from Jim, I did not find any file .img in his reply email and Chirp did NOT make a folder such as what he shows. My files .img are in my Documents folder.

This has nothing to do with attached files, email responses. Are you thinking that I mean your web browser when I mention Windows File Explorer? Here is another way to open the Windows File Explorer in the CHIRP backups folder...

  1. Type %appdata% in the search box of the Windows task bar and press enter
  2. Double-click the CHIRP folder
  3. Double-click the backups folder

Once in the backups folder, locate the file that I mentioned above (and any older backup files if they exist) and attach it/them to this issue. Thanks.

OK. So these file have a blank Aux memory area as well. Makes me wonder if this is just a factory mistake or if your radio doesn't support any of the Aux memory features. Your radio is just a regular dual-band UV-5R, right?

Yes it is a regular Baofeng UV-5R dual band HT. Should I factory reset it? I think I have done that but it still retains the original power on message that I set. I need to change that power on setting.

No. A RESET has no affect on the Aux memory area. If it did, it would have been recommend first thing and we wouldn't be having this conversation. ;)

Here is what you need to do...

  1. Download the attached file to a convenient location
  2. Start CHIRP
  3. Locate and load the file saved in step 1
  4. Switch to the Settings tab
  5. Select the Advanced tab
  6. In the bottom Range Override Parameter setting click the Default value to highlight it
  7. Key in the following case sensitive value: UseAtOwnRisk Note: copy-and-paste will usually fail so key it in manually if it doesn't work
  8. Upload to your radio
  9. After a successful upload finishes, restart CHIRP

No download from your radio. Keep the first successful download as your unedited "backup" file to be kept in a safe place. Download a second time (or make a copy of your backup file) and use it as your working file. Copy-and-paste you channels from your "bad" image to this one, edit the welcome message and finally upload to your radio to see if the welcome message is honored by your radio.

You must not have done steps 6 and 7 right. You must get all the text (including the spaces) removed from the box and then fill it with all 12 characters (UseAtOwnRisk) exactly as shown to override the check that prevents you from accidentally overwriting the Aux memory area with bad data. Once you get this correct, you will git a 'success' prompt at the end of the upload that tells you to restart CHIRP.

It just seems to not allow this image to upload and requires a download from the radio first ...

I just did a test and confirmed that there is a bug that is preventing you from uploading the file. I will try to sort it out today and get back to you with a fix.

OK. Thanks for uncovering this bug. My recent changes apparently didn't receive a sufficient number of testing scenarios.

Now follow these instructions to temporarily load the test driver module and then to upload the "good" file.

  1. start CHIRP
  2. load the newly attached test driver module using the instructions found here: LoadingTestModules
  3. continue with step 3 of the instructions provided in note 10 above

After a successful upload, you should see the "error message" that is not an error message, as shown in the attached screen capture.
