Bug #10721
openOther Settings not populated for BF-F8+ (UV-5R) - Cannot edit Power On / Welcome Message

Description
Just bought a new BF-F8+
- Open CHIRP Next
- Download from radio.
- Go to Settings > Other Settings
Key points:
- Only fields displayed are "Firmware Message 1" (HN5RV01) and "Firmware Message 2" (blank)
- These are read-only
- Usually there are a bunch of different settings here
I have tried to edit the BIN file using a hex editor to manually update these fields, and then they show correct in Browser > poweron_msg. However, when I upload the settings to radio, the updated message does not show at all, and if I re-download, it is set back to "WELCOME" / "".

- Status changed from New to Blocked
Yeah, please see #10505. Basically, Baofeng has started releasing radios that break when that chunk of memory is written to them, but they're using the exact same reported version as radios that don't. So we have no easy way to determine which radios are affected. In order to not break all the new radios people are buying, we've disabled the settings in that area for the time being. Work is being done to try to figure something else out, but for the moment we're choosing safety over functionality, which I hope you can understand :)

You need to use the latest test driver module that was made available in issue #10505.

Hi Jim, thanks for the link. I've loaded the latest test module (posted 2023-07-09), Downloaded from radio. No Power on message displayed in Other Settings.
So I tried modifying the img myself again to update welcome message, then cloned that to radio. Welcome message still is not changed.
In case it helps, radio was bought from this listing: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/175116055541

That was 8 days ago. There is no need to load any modules. You should be using the latest CHIRP-next build.
Please make a fresh download from your radio to CHIRP. Don't make any changes and attach it to this issue.

Ah, thanks Jim - I needed to do a brew update :)
Looks like it has the right settings now, but it displays a warning if I try to update them. Latest IMG attached.

You didn't provide the freshly downloaded image that I requested, but the reason for the warning is that either the radio has been detected as having a bug that would corrupt Aux memory if Aux memory is written to, the tab being uploaded to the radio is determined to have come from one of these radios or both. The only safe thing for CHIRP to do is to block the upload to the Aux memory area.
However if you wish to do it anyway, at your own risk , then follow the instructions in issue #10505.

A fresh one was attached to the post! File Baofeng_UV-5R_20230721.img

A BF-F8HP from Baofeng Tech won't have this issue. The BF-F8+III probably will.
